Mt Toubkal Winter
This is a truly amazing week trekking to the summit of North Africa’s highest mountain. Camping along the range of the mountains and rivers as you slowly scale the full height of Toubkal. Designed to allow you time to acclimatise to the changing altitude whilst enjoying superb vistas of the High Atlas Mountains. Supported by mules & muleteers, you will be utterly unencumbered so that you can enjoy the experience fully.
During the winter months, between October and Marsh, you will experience snow and will be provided with training so that you walk the slopes with complete confidence.

Itinerary
Fly to Marrakech – depending on your arrival time, there may be some time to explore this wonderfully colourful city before our group meeting in the early evening.

We leave at around 1100 after breakfast at the hotel. travelling by minibus to Imlil taking approx. 1.5 hours. we walk from Imlil to Aroumd village taking approx. 40 minutes. In the village, we will have lunch at the gîte where you can also enjoy a hot shower.

After breakfast, we leave the village and walk approximately 6 hours to Toubkal base camp. from Aroumd, the Toubkal trail goes up the flood plain, and zigzags up to make its way along, high above the gorge where we reach Sidi Chamharouch (2350m), the holy shrine. the Toubkal trail then climbs steeply in zigzags and traverses the flank of the valley well above the Mizane. it’s a steady climb up to Toubkal refuge where we stop for lunch and you can enjoy hot showers, sitting rooms and a self-catering kitchen at the refuge. that afternoon if there is snow then we can train and practice to ensure your safety. if there’s no snow, then you can have a free afternoon.

We start at 5 am to begin the climb up Toubkal reaching 4167m which is the highest peak in Morocco. this usually takes between 4-5 hours up, where we will have a light snack, then the descent is approximately 2-3 hours. we end back at the base camp for lunch followed by rest and a free afternoon.

We walk approx. 5 hours down to Aroumd village passing the holy shrine Sidi Chamharouch (2350m). Sidi Chamharouch: the shrine is probably a survival of a very ancient nature cult. on the approach to the village, you may notice a tree, sacred to local tradition, where the Berbers hang strips of cloth and make piles of stones. Aroumd village where we stay the night is the largest village of the Mizane valley, an extraordinary looking place, built on a huge moraine spur above the valley at 1840m. steep tiered fields of potatoes, onions, barley and various kinds of fruit line the valley sides, their terraces edged with purple iris. while at the village, you can take up the opportunity of a hammam and massage for a mere 10mad per person.

Today we enjoy a light walk in the village where you can experience the local culture, see the waterfall and do some shopping, the town boasts a lovely local carpet and jewellery shop. after lunch we get back onto the minibus and drive back to Marrakech. that evening (around 5), we will gather for a last night team dinner.

Today we take you by minibus back to the airport to catch your flight home. you can of course decide to stay on to explore more of Marrakech but we only provide transport back on the final morning of the trip.

What you need to do:
- Arrange travel insurance

What to pack:
- Clothing for both warm and cold/wet weather as well as gloves & hat (summits are very different environments).
- You should always carry rain clothing in your day pack as you never know…
- Water bottle including water purification tablets
- Appropriate season sleeping bag & travel pillow
- Day bag to allow you to carry spare clothing, food and water whilst hiking
- Strong walking boots with good ankle support and tread
- Travel towel, soap, toilet paper for use whilst camping and at refuges
- Torch (flashlight) & adaptors
- Walking poles if needed
* Please note that along the way, you will passing very traditional villages, so it would be good to keep shoulders and knees covered.
